I didn't play at this tournament, but what I saw was very interesting. There were three blue decks at the tournament, a grixis control, grixis twin, and Matt's merfolk. The twin player dropped because she had a decklist error, and dropped after the first match. The control player went 0-2 drop, I believe. Matt wound up going 3-2. Over a third of the decks were coco decks, and over a third of the top 8 was coco decks. The top 8 was:
John wound up taking down the tournament with his GW hatebears(ish) deck. At the time he had a very light black splash for zealous persecution in the SB. (All I do in magic any more is watch John play, and his deck is fuckin sweet.) If I recall correctly, the pairings were:
Quarterfinals:
Semifinals:
Finals:
I was surprised to see so little blue, and I don't think that this sample is representative of the metagame in that regard. With that said, I do think this tournament demonstrates that people love CoCo, and you should be prepared for all three of the big coco decks at any open tournament like a GP, PPTQ, or FNM. All of the CoCo decks were elves or anafenza, I was surprised not to see any of the naya zoo build. In my opinion the naya zoo deck is the best coco deck, followed by elves and anafenza coco. John thinks elves is better than zoo, but that might be because of our decks' mu's against those two. (Or he might be right. I'm kind of a fucko.) I don't know how much I'm worried about anafenza coco at the RPTQ, though, since I don't think the decks is very good. John & Matt, what were your guys' impressions?
